IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER

Glasford has levels of Gross Alpha & Combined Radium above drinking water standards.

Our water system has violated a drinking water standard for period 4/1/05 to 6/30/05.  Although this is not an emergency, you have right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation.

We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants.  Testing results we received show that our system exceeds the standard or maximum contaminant level (MCL), for gross alpha and combined radium.  The standard for gross alpha is 15 pico curies per liter (pCi/L) and for combined radium the standard is 5pCi/L.  The average level of gross alpha over the last year was 72.25pCi/L and combined radium was found at 15.4pCi/L.

What should I do?  You do not need to use an alternative (e.g. bottle) water supply.  However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor.

What does this mean?  This is not an immediate risk.  If it had been, you would have been notified immediately.  However, certain minerals are radioactive and may emit a form of radiation known as alpha radiation.  Some people who drink water containing alpha emitters in excess of the MCL over many years may have an increased risk of getting cancer.  Some people who drink water containing radium-226 or radium-228 in excess of the MCL over many years may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

What happened?  What is being done?  We are working with ILEPA to evaluate the water supply and researching options to correct the problem.  Glasford is working with the Economic Development Council for Central Illinois to obtain a grant for a new water system.
